BRAINSTORMING / IDEAS: HISTORY OF FLIGHT

CROP CIRCLES/AERIAL VIEW: INSPIRATION PHOTO & A ROUGH SKETCH

RUNWAY : PHOTO & ROUGH SKETCH

AIRPLANE DASHBOARD: INSPIRATION PHOTOS/ PROCESS

This was the concept I decided to go with to organize the history of flight dates and information. I divided the dates into six different categories: Firsts, Speed & Altitude, Around the World, Air Ballons & Helicopters, Crossed Bodies of Water, & Airplanes & Gliders. I used each dial on the dashboard to uniquely display the dates of the different categories. All of the information that goes with each date is at the bottom of the poster.

FINAL: HISTORY OF FLIGHT TIMELINE

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
As this project began, I was a little behind on getting started due to our last projects, and coming up with concepts for timelines was not happening as fast as it probably should/could have. Once I did decide on a concept however, I stuck with it and didn't change my mind ONCE, which was a really nice break from how I usually work. After the concept was there, organizing the info was a little bit trickier than I had expected. With so many dates and so much information, I couldn't think of any other way to make sense of it than to break it down into distinct categories.
I think that putting the info in the context of an airplane dashboard helps give the viewer a general idea of what the timeline is about from just a quick glance, then once they come in closer all the details are there.
Although this project was quick, it was challenging not only to come up with a creative concept that you could plug the info into, but also to organize the dates, text and really use basic typography skills we've been learning to help establish hierarchy and consistency throughout the timeline. For me, refining the small text and making sure everything aligned was probably the hardest and was extremely time consuming. I still would like to go back and really tighten up all of the text at the bottom of the poster. Overall though, I am happy with the end results and I feel like I was able to organize the dates in a way that is logical and still visually interesting.
